Area 3 Special Olympics hosted its annual Track & Field Event May 3 at the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center (minidome) on the campus of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. This event brought together athletes from within Washington, Carter, Johnson and Unicoi counties.

 

Athletes from each area participated in the opening Parade of Athletes, led by the Drum Corp from Happy Valley High School. After the parade, specially selected athletes along with several members of the Johnson City Police Department and other law enforcement agencies lit the torch. The color guard from Science Hill High School presented the colors and all united in the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance, which was led by athlete

 

Kaitlynn White from Unicoi County High School. Joanne Torgerson sang the National Anthem and invocation was given by Dr. James Bennington of Wesley United Methodist Church. The mayor of Johnson City, Jeff Banyas, welcomed all athletes, volunteers, coaches, teachers, and parents to the 2013 Area 3 Special Olympics and, being led by athlete Eileen Paduch, all recited the Special Olympic Oath: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
